Other Disc Golf & Park Stuff

Post Posted: Fri Mar 06, 2009 1:12 pm

Hello Disc Golfers,

In addition to the Waterloo monthly mini this Saturday (March 7, 2009) at Kyle, there is also a lot more going on. It is a great day to pitch in and help out at Austin’s Parks, thanks to the Austin Parks Foundation’s It’s My Park Day. At the bottom of this email is some info about it, and there are lots of projects that still need helpers.

One project near and dear to our hearts is the work at the Searight disc golf course, hosted by S.A.D.A.. From the list of activities on the APF website is this description:

Mary Moore - Disc Golf course maintenance and celebration
March 07, 2009
9:00 AM - 1:00 PM

We will be removing invasive plants as well as mulching the disc gold course. There are NO dogs allowed and a limited number of children with their parents will be permited. Special activities include live music and food

After the work day, SADA is having a general meeting, all are welcome to attend. Email sk91512 @ if you have any questions.

There is also a project at Bartholomew Park, that includes some clean up of the creek.

The Waterloo Club did not do an “It’s My Park Day Project” this year at Circle C because that project is nearing completion, and we are waiting on the city to do a bit more before we go in for our final stuff. There will likely be just one or two more workdays later this month.

There are also big tournaments in Victoria (though I think it is full) and in Wichita Falls (Josh Dann, 214-868-2996, jdann @

It will be a great weekend to get out and play disc golf, help disc golf, and help out all our wonderful parks! More info from APF is directly below.

Waterloo Disc Golf Club

It's My Park! Day is this Saturday, March 7
Register by Thursday at 8:30 AM to get a free It's My Park! Day tee shirt. There are still 45 projects in need of volunteers! See the full list at, or choose from the projects below.
Projects in Special Need of Volunteers
Gus Garcia Trail Project
Volunteers will be assisting PARD with a major trail building project and picking up litter that has accumulated near the creek's edge and through out the park. 40 volunteers still needed!
Dottie Jordan Park
Note: this project is from 12 - 3 pm. We will be cleaning the creek, spreading dillo dirt, manicuring overgrown landscaping, and there will be an art project for kids. 25 volunteers still needed.

Guerrero Park clean up
Pick up trash in the park and in the Country Club Creek. Also cut back invasive plants in the park and along the creek. 30 volunteers still needed.
Joslin Park's First It's My Park! Day Event
Help new park adopters get off the ground by participating at Joslin Park. They will be weeding, raking, and picking up trash. 15 volunteers needed.
Palm Park Fence Installation
Join volunteers from Texas Gas Service to install a cedar rail fence to keep cars off the grass, pick up trash, and plant wildflowers. Families welcome. 10 volunteers still needed!
Mayfield Park and Preserve invasive plant removal
We will continue with our efforts removing invasive plants at Mayfield Park and Preserve. This will involve cutting ligustrum, dragging brush to a chipping area and removing cats claw. 30 volunteers still needed.

In addition to the club monthly mini and the SADA work day at Searight (and the rest of the Parks Foundation’s “It’s My Park Day” projects), plus the out-of-town tournaments, there is also some work going on at Pease Park in Austin tomorrow.

The group from Eeyore’s that made some attempts at some erosion control efforts a few weeks ago at Pease will be back there tomorrow for some more work, much of it re-doing what was originally done – though hopefully doing it better this time.

To assist in the work being done in a more appropriate way, and to help with the work in general, we really need some disc golfers there to help. Lou Moreno (one of the Waterloo Club’s Board Members) will be there, but others are needed too.

One of the reasons the original work wasn’t done in a great way was that there were no disc golfers there to help direct and advise (and then much of what they did was later moved/undone by the golfers). We had met with them prior to the project, but had no one there the day of the work to help work with, direct, and advise the crews. (Of course, much of that is because we were having our own workday at Circle C that morning)

This time we hope to do so. We know it is a busy weekend for disc golf, but if you have a couple of hours on Saturday morning, please go down to Pease to help out. Again, being down there on Saturday morning is your chance to give input on where these erosion controls go, so that they work with the course, not against it. We know that these solutions aren’t perfect, and likely won’t be permanent, but they will hopefully help some (in the vein of “some erosion help there is better than nothing).

Works starts at 9:00 am and will continue for a few hours.

Holes #12, #13, and #14 will be closed during the morning while the work is going on.

For those who haven’t seen Dave Moody in awhile, here is your chance… He is going to be hanging out down at the Pease parking lot with his stuff this afternoon (Friday April 10th) starting about 5:30 pm. Come on down and say “hi” and hoist a cold frosty one with Dave. I know that I sure miss him and his disc golf trailer, and the folks he had helping out, being down there all the time.

This weekend is the 19th Annual Capital of Texas Open (COTO) at Pease Park in Austin, hosted by Team Justice as part of the 2009 HOTT series. You can get more info on the Team Justice site or the pdga discussion board

Team Justice is allowing Waterloo Disc Golf Club to run a membership drive, raffle, and putting contest again this year. The raffle grand prize will be one of the old Circle C baskets that's been retrofitted with a free standing base. The putting contest should be a lot of fun too; a combination of the EDGE SkillShot and regular putting.

If you are playing COTO, come on by the Waterloo station and buy some raffle tickets, play the putting game, and please please join the club or renew your membership. If you like what has happened out at Circle C, we need your support to finish the project and to help us continue those kinds of improvements at our other courses. If you aren’t sure of your membership status, not to worry, our folks will have a full list with them.

If you aren’t playing COTO, come on down to Pease and check out Team Justice’s great assortment of discs and stamps, plus watch some really good golf; and while you are there come by our station too. It will be a fun weekend for all!

Hello Texas Disc Golfers!

The combined Pro and Amateur Disc Golf Championships started today up in Kansas City. It was announced at the banquet last night that Texas had the largest representation of any state, with 85 players. Below is a list of most of them, though I know I have probably missed a few (sorry about that!!!!). Also below are links to the PDGA sites where the results are being posted as they come in.

Follow along and root for your friends, favorite players, fellow Texans, whomever you want. Good luck to all the competitors up in KC!!!

(and on a personal note: Go Waterloooooooooooooooooooooo Club members, I think there are about 20 of them up there)

Help request from Earlybirds disc golf club. We are having work days at The Rivery in Georgetown to prepare the course for a tourney on Sunday, December 13th. It is going to be done by Kevin Eldridge who just threw an awesome tourney in Burnet Tx. The course was in great shape and the tourney was the best the area has seen in a very long time. Kevin is bringing his tourney to The Rivery in Georgetown. Starting November 1st and every sunday in november the EarlyBirds will be working with the Round Rock Double R's to prep this course for the tourney. I have worked with the Georgetown PARD to give us the mulch for around the baskets and granite gravel for the tee boxes. We will be painting and remarking the baskets as well and clearing the fairways of any debris. GTPARD will be cutting the course prior to the tourney. We will also be measuring and posting the footage distance for each hole as well. The Rivery is a gem of a course in Georgetown and with a little love, ALL discgolfers can enjoy this course. As mentioned, the first work day is this sunday & every sunday in november but, if all the work is completed in 1 or 2 weeks, we will not need all 4 weekends. thx Manny Gonzales

What time do the work days start?

Is there anything that the volunteers need to bring (or would help to bring if they have it)?

We got word from the park supervisor at Circle C that there are some very aggressive ground hornets on hole #10 at Circle C. The city has flagged off the area and will be treating it, but possibly not for another few days. So if you are playing out there, be sure to avoid that area; apparently the hornets have attacked some golfers already.

Also, coming up next week on Wednesday evening is a City of Austin meeting about Pease Park and the impact future city work will have on the course. Here is the email we received from the city about it. I believe the location listed is the activity center near W. 29th and N. Lamar (across W. 29th from the bike shop). It would be great to have a big turnout from the golfers to show that we really do care about our course at Pease.

Pease Park Water Quality and Stream Restoration Project

We have scheduled a disc golf stakeholder's meeting concerning how the project will affect the disc golf course at Pease Park.

Public Meeting

Subject: Pease Park Restoration Project: How this will affect your Disc Golf Course

Date: November 4, 2009

Time: 6:00pm

Location: Senior Activity Center: 2874 Shoal Crest Ave

Info: Bill Wells @ 974-7828

Finally, mark your calendars for a couple of work days at Pease on November 14th and November 21st. These won’t be for work on the disc golf course, but instead will be hosted by the group Trees for Pease, and will be all about replanting a bunch of trees at the park to help replace/repair some of the damage and loss of trees due to the drought and several recent severe storms. We have been told that the tree planting won’t negatively affect the disc golf course (it may not help or enhance the course either, but it will help the park as a whole). This is a very worthy project and an excellent chance to show the city and the other big user groups and supporters of Pease Park that the disc golf community cares about the park and wants to make it better. We’ll have more info on the workdays as they get closer.

KXAN (channel 36) is running a story this evening (mon.nov 2nd) on Pease Park and the changes in store for the park and the disc golf course, and some of the controversies. The main story will be on their 5 pm broadcast (supposedly about half-way through, but who really knows what time it will actually air), and maybe, possibly shorter versions at 6pm and 10pm.

If you watch, be kind – even after all these years interviews still make me very nervous; and who knows what kind of sound bites will get pulled out of the full interview. But hey, I made a couple of putts Smile

Here is more info on the November 14th Trees for Pease workday. It is very important that we get as many disc golfers out there helping as possible!

The planting starts at 9:30 am

Meet by the big picnic table area at the south end of the park (by the playground). When you check in with the organizers, please mention you are a disc golfer (and heck, wear a disc golf shirt so the other volunteers will know too).

They recommend wearing clothes you don't mind getting dirty, bring gloves and if you have a wheelbarrow that you can bring, it would be greatly appreciated.

You can register as a volunteer by clicking here: salsa.democracyinactio..._KEY=54712

If you want to get there a little early, they will also have Veterans Day ceremonies and tree planting from 8:30 to 9 am.

After the work, there will be live music and refreshments from noon - 3:00 pm (music by Will Sexton and the Wine and Nuts; refreshments courtesy of Blue Star Cafeteria, Uncle Billy's Brew&Que, and Austin Java).

Come on out and celebrate Pease, Love, and Rock & Roll!

If you can't make it but would like to donate funds to the project, you can send a check to Austin Parks Foundation (payable to APF), just put in the memo line "Trees for Pease" project, and also mention that you are a disc golfer. Because it is payable to APF you can get a tax deduction for making a charitable contribution. APF, 816 Congress Ave, Suite 1680, Austin, TX, 78701. You can also donate online by going to the Member Page of the APF website and making a gift to the Pease Park Fund - The APF has figured that it takes about $150 per tree to plant it and keep it irrigated.

The Waterloo Club is donating $300 to the project, and we are working hard to get a lot of volunteers there to help that day. We hope you can join us in this worthy effort to improve Pease Park.

Directions to the course - From I-35 and Ben White Blvd (SH 71), go east Ben White. Take the Montopolis Dr. exit and turn right onto Montopolis Dr. Turn left onto Burleson Rd. Turn left onto Metropolis Dr. Turn right into the first parking lot. The course will be on your left.

We just got word from Stephanie Allen at South Austin Disc Association of changes to the Searight construction plan, and the sudden scheduling of a work day this weekend.

Stephanie sent:

Good afternoon all –

Due to a change in plans, this weekend all 18 baskets will be pulled so that the City can work on the entire course at once (rather than keeping 9 holes open at a time). The course will be back up and running once all work is completed.

In light of this, we are holding our first big work day this Saturday, January 9th. Starting at 8:00 a.m., we'll be:

--Pulling baskets, benches and trash cans
--Spreading mulch on the back nine
--Cleaning off the new tee pads on the back nine
--General trash pick up

We'll have a breakfast burritos in the morning - first come, first serve. Any help will be greatly appreciated!!! If you have a rake to help with the mulch-spreading, please bring it along.

The amount of hours we spend will depend on how many folks come out to help, so please put on your warmest jacket, earmuffs and scarves and come on out!

Thanks in advance and see you out there!

Here is something that Stephanie just sent out about Searight...

Good morning everyone -
Please keep next Saturday open on your calendars to help us out at Searight for another workday (Jan 30th). It's time to install teesign poles, spread more mulch, and anything else we have ready to go by next weekend.

The Searight workday will start at 8:00. We'll likely work until around noon or 1:00, but it could be longer if the City lets us know about any new tasks that are needed to start by then.

Of course, workdays are weather-dependent, but we're hoping for clear skies all week so we can have another great workday.

Thanks to everyone that came out last time, and thanks in advance to everyone that makes it out this time - have a great weekend!
