Looking Back at 2009 and Ahead to 2010

Wednesday, December 16, 2009 (23:00:32) Waterloo Event
We are coming to the end of another great disc golf year in Central Texas. The Waterloo Club (WDGC) enjoyed a tremendous 2009 thanks to the support of disc golfers in the Austin area and throughout all of Texas. We donated nearly $3,200 in sponsorship to various tournaments, including many here in Central Texas. We ran our tenth Ice Bowl in February at Zilker Park; there were 185 players and the club raised $750 and 359 pounds of food for the Capital Area Food Bank. WDGC ran a monthly mini at a different course each month. We also ran a weekly mini at Bartholomew for much of the year while there was light in the evenings, and we continued the Spring & Summer Waterleagues at Zilker. The 32nd Annual Waterloo Disc Golf Classic was a great success, raising $8,100 during the event. $6,525 was donated to the Austin Ronald McDonald House and $1,525 will be used on disc golf projects in Austin. The course improvements at Circle C were completed during the Spring and were a huge success. Thanks to everyone who donated their time and manual labor to the effort. It is now one of the premier courses in the area. Immediately after the course was re-opened the club held the first PDGA sanctioned tournament at Circle C in many, many years: The Battle of Slaughter Creek. Look for this to become an annual tradition. The new course at Manor also came online in 2009, This was a welcome addition for those players looking for a longer, more challenging course. Another new course, The Met Center opened late in the year. This great new course was designed by Waterloo Board Member Mike Olse and it is on private land out near Hwy 183 & Burleson.

Our big course improvement project coming up will be at Mary Moore Searight. The renovation is in partnership with South Austin Disc Association, Austin Parks Foundation, and the City of Austin Parks & Recreation Dept. We are going to give Searight the “Circle C” treatment. The course has just been pulled out and will be only nine holes while the other half of the course is reworked. Then the new nine will be opened and the second half will be completed. Sadly, we have played SeaWrong for the last time, as the concrete tee boxes and other improvements will no longer allow the flexibility to set up the course backwards. However, it should be an awesome course when we get it put back in. How long it is out depends on how fast the disc golf community gets our portion of the work done, so keep an eye out for workdays and volunteer opportunities at Searight, most likely starting in January 2010! Also, our goal following Searight is to immediately start work on Bartholomew. We anticipate that 2010 will be another great year for the improvement of our local courses.

Pease & Circle C Information

Friday, October 30, 2009 (15:53:36) Waterloo Event
We received word from the park supervisor at Circle C that there are some very aggressive ground hornets on hole #10 at Circle C. The city has flagged off the area and will be treating it, but possibly not for another few days. So if you are playing out there, be sure to avoid that area; apparently the hornets have attacked some golfers already.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Also, coming up next week on Wednesday evening is a City of Austin meeting about Pease Park and the impact future city work will have on the course. Here is the email we received from the city about it. I believe the location listed is the activity center near W. 29th and N. Lamar (across W. 29th from the bike shop). It would be great to have a big turnout from the golfers to show that we really do care about our course at Pease.

Pease Park Water Quality and Stream Restoration Project

We have scheduled a disc golf stakeholder's meeting concerning how the project will affect the disc golf course at Pease Park.

Public Meeting

Subject: Pease Park Restoration Project: How this will affect your Disc Golf Course

Date: November 4, 2009

Time: 6:00pm

Location: Senior Activity Center: 2874 Shoal Crest Ave

Info: Bill Wells @ 974-7828

----------------------------------------------------------------

Finally, mark your calendars for a couple of work days at Pease on November 14th and November 21st. These won’t be for work on the disc golf course, but instead will be hosted by the group Trees for Pease, and will be all about replanting a bunch of trees at the park to help replace/repair some of the damage and loss of trees due to the drought and several recent severe storms. We have been told that the tree planting won’t negatively affect the disc golf course (it may not help or enhance the course either, but it will help the park as a whole). This is a very worthy project and an excellent chance to show the city and the other big user groups and supporters of Pease Park that the disc golf community cares about the park and wants to make it better. We’ll have more info on the workdays as they get closer.

32nd Waterloo Registration Now Open

Thursday, September 17, 2009 (21:44:02) Waterloo Event
If you are interested in playing, please mail in your registration with payment as soon as possible. This event fills up every year, and it has been known to fill within as few as 5 days after registration begins, though it sometimes takes a bit longer, like 7,10, or 14 days to fill up. Anyway, don’t wait. If you aren’t sure if you can play, my advice is to register anyway. If you have to cancel, you’ll get almost a complete refund. The only thing we’d keep is the portion that goes to the fundraising and it will still go towards the fundraising ($4 for regular registrations; amount varies by division for McC-Notes). Plus you’ll make someone on the waitlist very very happy.

Registration information can be found on the tournament thread in the Community Forums (under Current/Future events):
http://www.austindiscgolf.org/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=57

Mailing the form and payment in is the BEST way to register. Postmarks are used to determine date of entry. You can also register in person with Gordon at the Thursday Zilker events, and at the Ace Race at Zilker on Saturday, September 26th (assuming spots are still available at that point).
